How Split helps

  1. 01

No paying in: everyone pays, Split does the maths

The simplest kitty has no pot at all. Whoever pays for something adds it. Split shows who's ahead and who still owes – you settle up at the end.

  2. 02

    With a treasurer: record contributions

If one person collects the money, record each contribution as a payment to them. When they pay for everyone, they add the expense. The balance shows whether the kitty still covers it and who needs to top up.

  3. 03

    Easy for everyone to follow

Every expense, contribution and change is in the group's history. So there are no questions about where the money went.

Tips

  1. 1

Decide at the start whether you work with a treasurer or everyone pays themselves. Doing both gets confusing.

  2. 2

Record contributions right away, even small cash amounts.

  3. 3

Settle up at the end: whatever is left in the kitty shows in the treasurer's balance.

Frequently asked questions

Your question isn't here? Write to us

Does Split hold the group fund's money?

No. Split moves no money and is not an account. The app keeps track of who paid in and spent what. The money stays with you, for example with the treasurer.

How do I record a contribution to the kitty?

As a payment from you to the person who runs the kitty. When they later pay for something for everyone, they add it as an expense. Split nets both in the balance.

What happens to what's left in the kitty?

The balance shows how much the treasurer still holds for the group. When you settle up, Split suggests whom they pay back and how much.
