How Split helps
- 01
One place for everything shared
Rent, power, internet, groceries and the new vacuum cleaner all go into one group. Everyone sees the same balance and the same history – including who changed what.
- 02
Rent by room size
Split the rent by shares, for example by square metres, or with fixed amounts per person. Keep splitting groceries and internet equally.
- 03
Recurring costsPremium
Recurring expenses are planned for Premium: the rent will then add itself every month. Until then, you add it monthly – it takes a few seconds.
- 04
Moving in and out without starting over
Whoever moves in starts with a balance of zero. Whoever moves out stays in the group with their old costs until everything is settled, and isn't included in new expenses.
Tips
- 1
Agree on whether rent is split by room size or equally before the first expense is added.
- 2
Settle up once a month, for example on the first. That keeps the amounts small.
- 3
Add the small purchases too. All those little amounts are what usually causes arguments.
- 4
Add your bank details in Split, so the others can copy them right away when settling up.
Add the names here first

Frequently asked questions
Your question isn't here? Write to us
Can Split add the rent automatically every month?
Not yet. Recurring expenses are planned for Premium; the rent will then add itself weekly, monthly or yearly. Until then, you add the rent yourselves each month.
How do we split rent when the rooms differ in size?
Split the rent by shares, for example by square metres, or with fixed amounts per person. Groceries and internet can still be split equally.
Does every roommate have to install the app?
No. The invite link opens Split in the browser. Installing it is handy for quick access, but not required.
Does everyone in the household see the same numbers?
Yes. All expenses, changes and deletions are visible in the history for the whole group. So there's no argument about who entered what.
