Instead of a spreadsheet
The spreadsheet that does the maths itself.
A spreadsheet for splitting costs is quick to build. It gets hard when several people add to it, you're on the move, or not everyone took part in everything.

How Split helps
- 01
How to build the sheet
One row per expense: title, amount, who paid. One column per person with their share, for example the amount divided by the number of people involved. At the bottom, add up for each person what they paid and what their share is.
- 02
The formula for the balance
Balance = paid minus share. If it's positive, the person gets money back; if it's negative, they owe. Who pays whom follows from offsetting the biggest debt against the biggest credit – step by step.
- 03
Where the sheet hits its limits
Only one person can really maintain it, it's a pain on the move, and every expense not everyone took part in needs its own formulas. Split calculates exactly the same way, but everyone adds their own – even without signal.
Tips
- 1
For a one-off bill, the worked example on the start page is enough – no sheet needed.
- 2
If you stick with the sheet, keep it in a shared cloud folder so everyone sees the same version.
- 3
Round only at the end. If you round shares along the way, you'll be a few cents off at the end.

Frequently asked questions
Your question isn't here? Write to us
Is there a spreadsheet template to download?
No. This page explains how to build the sheet yourself. Split takes the sheet off your hands: it calculates on the same principle, and everyone adds their own expenses.
How do I work out who owes whom?
Subtract each person's share from what they paid. Then offset the biggest debt against the biggest credit until everyone is at zero. Split does exactly that automatically.
Can I export my expenses from Split as a spreadsheet?
Not yet. Export to CSV, Excel and PDF is planned and will be tied to a personal Premium.
Ready for your first group?
