Settling up
How settling works
Split does the maths in two steps: first each person's balance, then a settlement that needs as few transfers as possible.

Step by step
- 1
Each person's balance
For each person, Split adds up what they paid and subtracts their share of all expenses. A plus means they get money back; a minus means they owe others.
- 2
Income and transfers
Income works the other way round from expenses: whoever received it owes the others their share. Transfers and payments marked as paid move balances between two people.
- 3
Few transfers
From the balances, Split builds the suggestion: whoever owes the most pays whoever is owed the most – until everyone is at zero. That way you need as few transfers as possible.
Good to know
- An example: Lea pays €240, Sam €90, Robin €60; shared by three, that's €130 each. Robin pays €70 and Sam €40 to Lea – two transfers instead of several small ones.
- All balances always add up to zero.
