Without signing in: the device account
If you start Split without signing in, you automatically get an anonymous account for this device. It needs no email and no password – but it has one limit you should know about.

Step by step

Start without signing in
The first time, Split asks “How would you like to start?”. With “Continue without signing in”, Split creates an anonymous device account. Nobody learns who you are.

Check the status in your account
Under “Your groups”, tap the person icon “Account & settings” at the top. Under “Device & sync” it says “Not synced” as long as the account only lives on this device.

Secure it in time
Tap “Link device” there and secure the account with a passkey, Google or Apple. Afterwards it says “Synced”, and your groups are available on other devices.
Good to know
- As long as the account isn't secured, your data is only on this device. If you lose the device or clear the browser data, it's gone.
- With a passkey the account stays anonymous. With Google or Apple it becomes a personal account.
- You can buy the group license for Premium with the device account too. The yearly plan and lifetime need a secured account.
