Splitting

How Split rounds

€100 divided by three doesn't come out even. Split still works to the cent – without losing a cent or charging one too many.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Work out the shares

Split divides the amount in the chosen proportion and first rounds each share down to whole cents.

  2. 2

    Share the leftover cents

The cents left over go to the people with the largest remainder – on a tie, to those higher up in the list. So with €100 divided by three, one person pays €33.34 and two pay €33.33.

  3. 3

    Check the total

The shares always add up exactly to the total. That's also why all balances always add up to zero.

Good to know

  • This applies to “Equally” and “By shares”. With “Exact amounts” you set every cent yourself.
  • For currencies without decimals, such as yen, Split works in whole units.
